Germany
Dear honey;
How are my darlings tonight?
I received your letter of June second today and a letter from Steve Bellinger. He doesn’t sound like he figured on getting out for a while. He’s been across a long time too. He is in the Philippines now, and that he had been moving around quite a lot.
I spent all day in Andernach today. It took me a lot longer to do the job because my helper cut his foot, so I had to work alone.
I pulled a truck out of the ditch for some Germans and they gave me a case of sweet cherries. (German – kisshes). At the place that I was working in Andernach I moved a truck frame out of the path to an old couple’s garden and they gave me a bunch of strawberries, and were they ever good. They were as big around as a silver dollar and good and sweet.
Colleen stays with you quite a bit now doesn’t she.
I guess I’d better close tonight honey and get to bed. I’ll try to write a longer letter tomorrow.
Goodnight darling. Lots of hugs and kisses for my darlings.
Your loving husband
Clarence

Note: I remember my dad telling this story. He thought the farmer said he was going to give him kisses. I believe the German word for cherry is kirsh, but it sounded like kissh to my dad.
