Germany

Dear honey;

     How are my darlings tonight? I am fine. I received two letters from you and one from ma today. Your letters were the ones of the twenty third and twenty fourth.

June 2, 1945

     That was all the farther I got last night honey. We had some of the company working yet when I started the letter and one of the staff sergeants came into the room with our master sergeant and they started a little party, so I couldn’t finish up. It was almost

     I got your letter of the twenty fifth today. Those cards weren’t in the letter I told you about them in. I sent them in a separate envelope. I haven’t sent the pictures yet. I have to have a box made to send them in. They are about fifteen by twenty. I’ll send them someday soon.

     They wanted to put me back to welding for a few days, but I had to talk them out of it. I’d have a job getting the wrecker back in shape after someone else was on it a few days. I can’t even trust my helper on it. He’s getting better but I don’t care (to) leave him alone on it. He’d probably get off some place and get lost, or drunk. He’d be lost in either case.

     I went up to Bruet, near Cologne, this morning. I had to try to talk them into trading us one of their welding machines. I didn’t get very far with them though. I didn’t get anything for the company, but I got some leather and thirty eight revolver ammunition for myself and Larsen. There were some fellows there that used to be in our company.

     Well I’m supposed to be working now so I’d better close and go see if they have been looking for me.

     Goodnight darling. Lots of love for my darlings.

                                                                  Your loving husband

                                                                           Clarence

P.S. I love you darling.

P.S. We lost our Captain, and we’re glad of (it). I thought he was going to break me to a private a few days ago. He was breaking a lot of guys. I guess I’m safe for a while now if I don’t “blow my stack” too much.

Note: The "pictures" mentioned in this letter are beautiful prints of the Madonna and child. He purchased at least three: one for my mother, and one each for his mother and hers.
   On June 1, Lt. David Blough took over command of the 301st, replacing Captain Carl E. Kolda.
   The 301st was stationed in Rech, Germany at this time. The men were comfortably lodged in Hotel Appel and Hotel Ahr Blume which provided entertainment.
