V-Mail

Dear honey;

     How are my darlings today? I’m fine and hope

everything is alright at home.

     I suppose you have been looking for a letter for some

time now. The last letter I got from you was the second of

Feb. I guess that that box was a little slow coming through.

I didn’t get it.

     I’ve changed my mind about the Navy. It’s not for me.

     I’ve been working in the “galley” since I’ve been on

board.

     I guess I’d better quit writing honey. It’s worse than

trying to write in the “Grand Central” station.

     Lots of love for my darlings.

                                                 Your loving husband

                                                         Clarence

Note: This V-Mail was written aboard ship as the 301st headed for England. My father grew up on the water, and must have thought at one time that he would prefer the Navy over the Army. This Atlantic crossing changed his mind somehow. Whether it was KP duty in the galley or cramped quarters aboard ship, I don't know.

Clarence or Mac, as he was called by his buddies, is second from right. His friend Morris (Kap)Kaplan is seated on his left.

The ship was either the USS Mt. Vernon or the SS Washington

The Red Cross distributed playing cards to the men and they got plenty of use.
